Self-Service Password Management
The password linked to your SSO account can be changed by yourself at anytime using this link.
The following options will appear, allowing for different actions depending on the circumstances.
If you use a university deployed Mac, please utilize the instructions here.
Activate
The Activate operation will only be necessary in two situations:
A first-time user needs to activate their account in order to create a password.
An IT technician has asked a user to re-activate their account in order to create new security questions.
If you fall into either of these qualifications, continue following these instruction
Click on the "Activate" option.
Enter your E# in the "CUI User ID" prompt (the domain can remain set to CUI).
Enter the temporary password that has been provided to you by a technician, either via email or over the phone.
Click "Next" and the "Next" again on the next page.
The next page will prompt you to create security questions, which you will be asked every time you wish to Reset your password. The answers to these questions must be at least 5 characters long (an inconvenient but necessary restriction) and they are not cAsE sEnsItIvE. Click "Next" when finished.
If your answers satisfy the requirements, the activation process is now complete. You will very likely need to Reset your password now, so click on "Reset Password" if that is the case. You can now follow the instructions under "Reset" below starting on step 5.
Reset
The Reset operation will be necessary in the following circumstances:
You have forgotten your current password or your current password is not working on any account.
You have just Activated your account (if this is the case, skip to step 5).
An IT technician has asked you to Reset your password.
If you fall into any of these qualifications, continue following these instructions:
Click on the "Reset" option.
Enter your E# in the "CUI User ID" prompt (the domain can remain set to CUI) and click "Next".
Answer the prompted security questions. Keep in mind that you originally answered these questions when your account was first activated, so they may not reflect your current setting. These answers are not cAsE sEnsItIve, and the minimum requirement is 5 characters so you may have had to alter a shorter answer. When finished, click "Next".
If you cannot answer the given questions (or if you see that no questions have been created), it's no problem! An IT technician will need to help "Activate" your account, so please contact us, explain you're issue, and we will assist you from there.
You will now be prompted to create a new password. Make sure to follow the Student or Staff/Faculty password requirements depending on which you fall under.
Confirm that "ask me to change password at next login" is not checked unless you want to Reset your password again for whatever reason. "Unlock my account" can remain checked - it is simply a precaution.
Once your new password is accepted, click proceed and your account password has been reset!
Unlock
The Unlock operation can be used in the following circumstance:
Your account has been locked and you are prevented from Resetting it.
This can happen for several reasons, the most common being too many failed reset attempts. Unlock operations are not too common since Reset operations also contain a way to Unlock an account.
If you fall into this qualification, continue following these instructions:
Click on the "Unlock" option.
Enter your E# in the "CUI User ID" prompt (the domain can remain set to CUI) and click "Next".
Answer the prompted security questions. Keep in mind that you originally answered these questions when your account was first activated. These answers ARE cAsE sEnsItIve, and the minimum requirement is 5 characters so you may have had to alter a shorter answer. When finished, click "Next".
If you cannot answer the given questions (or if you see that no questions have been created), it's no problem! An IT technician will need to help "Activate" your account, so please contact us, explain your issue, and we will assist you from there.
The account has now been unlocked. You may now try to Reset again or log in to an account again - whatever it was that led you to unlock your account.
If you are still being told that your account is locked, don't worry! There are several layers to the ways in which an account can be locked, so please contact an IT technician to determine the next steps.
Change
The Change operation can be used in the following circumstance:
You know what your current password is and you want to change it.
If you fall into this qualification, continue following these instructions:
Click on the "Change" option.
Enter your E# in the "CUI User ID" prompt (the domain can remain set to CUI).
Enter your current password as you know it in the "Old password" prompt.
Create and confirm a new password in the final two prompts. Make sure to follow the Student or Staff/Faculty password requirements depending on which you fall under.
Click "Next" and you're done! Your new password is now set. If you receive the error "Change password failed: Cannot change password: unknown user name or bad password," try again and be sure to enter every password intentionally. If the error persists, it may be better to try the "Reset" option described above.
